Peachtree Corners swears in first city councilmember of color
Peachtree Corners made history in November when the residents elected Joe Sawyer as the first person of color to sit on the City Council. He was sworn in on Tuesday, Jan. 25 in a ceremony with several others.
“History was made tonight!” he posted shortly afterward on Facebook. “Thank you to my wife Kimberly Sawyer for all her support! Thank you to my family and friends in Peachtree Corners for their support! Time to get to work!”
As the first Black city council member, Sawyer will fill a need for inclusivity, said Penny Poole, president of the Gwinnett County Chapter of the NAACP.
“He will bring a different voice and a different perspective,” she said. “It’s important to hear every voice.”Click here to read the complete story with pictures
