Tips for Implementing Team Building Activities for Your Business

Successful companies are consistently looking for new ways to build high performance teams, including new approaches to team-building activities.

One new trend for these activities is to make these experiences shorter and more intently focused on building relationships.  These team building activities should be designed to instill a sense of common purpose among employees, while ensuring the event allows everyone on the team to participate.

Many companies are moving away from team building programs which can be physically demanding and high stress because they may work well for some members of the team but excludes others.

Critical Elements for a successful team-building event
    • Clear business goals and objectives, such as making new team members feel welcome in established teams, finding better ways to resolve conflicts, preparing for a move or merger, and encouraging innovative thinking.
    • Information on participants' learning styles and expectations for the event is helpful.  Make sure everyone can participate in a meaningful way.
    • A willingness to invest time and money.   Current trend shows companies are more willing to invest in activities that are two to four hours in duration and provide a measurable ROI.
    • A good match in the activity, the site and the size of the group. Studies have shown that teams generally should be kept to six to ten people each when there is some sort of competition.
    • A site visit ahead of time to eliminate surprises.  Advance site visits can help the organizer answer frequently asked questions of the participants.
    • An assessment that ties the event back to business goals ensures the time spent is worthwhile.
As companies are finalizing their 2018 budgets and wrapping up 2017, now is the perfect time to schedule a successful team-building event.  It’s much easier to have employees engage in effective team building activities for work to make them appreciate your company and their fellow employees.
